All traffic to Trovebox services over SSL/HTTPS is now secured against the heartbleed bug.

Update / 7:01 PM Tuesday, April 8, 2014 (GMT)

Update / 5:49 PM Tuesday, April 8, 2014 (GMT)
All of our ELBs have been patched.

It was released yesterday morning that a major security issue was found in software used by a large part of the Internet. It’s named the heartbleed bug and affects communications done over SSL/HTTPS. We’re actively working on making sure that Trovebox sites are no longer vulnerable to this issue.

We terminate SSL connections at our AWS ELBs and found out that ELBs were vulnerable to the heartbleed bug.

We employ two sets of web servers. One set serves traffic for our main site at trovebox.com. Those web servers were never vulnerable and we don’t need to make any changes to them. The second set serves traffic for your account (i.e. https://current.trovebox.com). These web servers were vulnerable and we’re working to patch them. Please remember that we terminate most connections at an AWS ELB and those were known to be vulnerable. This means that SSL traffic to all Trovebox resources were subject to the heartbleed bug.

Learn more about Trovebox and see our pricing plans.

It took years before we added video support for Trovebox. Once we decided it was time to finally do it we took a few steps back to understand how videos fit into an organization’s media repository.

When we came up with the user interface and experience for viewing photos we wanted to accomplish 3 goals.

Make it easy and pleasurable to view lots and lots of photos.

Show large enough previews that you usually didn’t need to see the larger version.

Display only what mattered.

The result was our fixed height masonry layout*. In addition to our stated goals the layout had several unintended benefits.

The biggest benefit was leveraging your brain’s trained ability to scan from left to right. Viewing photos this way felt much more natural than we originally anticipated; especially when part of a chronological series.

Another benefit was how beautiful a panoramic photo looked. We blew our own minds when we saw how a scenic panorama seamlessly fit alongside other photos. It completely changed the experience of viewing photos.

Now that we wanted to support videos we asked ourselves the same questions. What did we want to accomplish? We came up with 3 goals.

Apply the same goals we had for photos to videos.

Coalesce photos and videos into the same interface.

Keep video playback as lightweight of an action as possible.

Prototyping a user interface and experience gives you about 80% of an idea how effective the prototype is in reality. Like all 80/20 rules the last 20% is the most important. When you start putting live content into the prototype it reveals the good, bad and ugly.

In our case it was all good. Fantastic, actually. Viewing photos and videos inherited all of the benefits from viewing just photos. Video previews have a subtle play icon overlayed to indicate that it can be played. Upon clicking the icon the video instantly begins to play inline. Much like the photo previews the videos are large enough that you often don’t need to see the larger version.

It’s the lightest weight video viewing experience we’ve seen. We didn’t really grasp how much we’d love it until we started seeing our own photos and videos in this new layout.

Ready to see it in action? I’ve embedded a personal gallery of my own containing videos and photos. It’ll work directly from this blog post or you can view the full site.

You already store your photos on Trovebox, and you should be able to use those photos in other places. To make this a little easier, we built a WordPress plugin that lets you use your Trovebox photos on your WordPress blog.

Installing the Trovebox for WordPress plugin

Installing the Trovebox for WordPress plugin is easy. While you’re logged into your WordPress site, visit the Plugins area of your WordPress admin area. Search for Trovebox and install the plugin straight from the plugin area. Select Install and your WordPress site will do the work of installing the plugin.

If for some reason that doesn’t work, you can download the plugin straight from the WordPress plugin page. Download this page to this

Configuring the Plugin

Now that you’ve installed the Trovebox plugin, you’re almost ready to use it. There’s one problem: WordPress has no idea what site is yours! Let’s set up the plugin first. This involves entering your Trovebox site URL into the plugin’s settings.

Visit the Settings area of your WordPress site and select OpenPhoto. Enter your Trovebox URL without the http(s). For example, https://current.trovebox.com would be entered as current.trovebox.com

Confirm these settings and you’re now ready to start inserting photos from your Trovebox site.

Using the Plugin

You can do lots of things with your Trovebox site integrated with WordPress. You can pull individual photos from your Trovebox site to view on your WordPress site. Here’s how to do that.

When you’d like to add a photo to your post, select Add Media. You can add photos from several sources, but today we’re interested in adding photos from the plugin.

Select “OpenPhoto” from the Add Media section. Here you can view all your photos and select which ones you’d like to use in your post. You can filter them by tag to find just the photo you need.

Once you’ve found the photo you’d like to add, change the options to your liking and select Add. Success! Now that photo is in your WordPress post, and anyone who can view your post can view the photo. You can also edit any HTML in the post so your photo appears just the way you want it to.

From here you can do many things with the WordPress plugin. You can use it to insert individual photos into a blog post or create a full photo blog. Happy blogging!

Have questions? We’ve got answers. Leave a comment, send an email, or mention us on Twitter.

P.S. If you’re not using WordPress or want to share your photos elsewhere, we’ve got you covered. You can use your photos anywhere with HTML. Select the Share arrow on the photo, and we’ll give you some HTML to use. Then you can copy and paste the HTML into blog posts, forum discussions, or anywhere you like.

Here at Trovebox, we’ve helped users organize photo collections of all kinds: public galleries, private internal collections, and some combination of the two.

Today we’re going to talk about creating a completely private gallery for your organization. We’ve talked previously about keeping your photos secure, so let’s shift our focus to keeping your gallery hidden from the world.

We take many steps to make sure your internal photo collection is as private as it can be, but there are a few steps you can take as well.

Managing individual photos

Your photos are uploaded as private by default, no matter who’s uploading them. We chose this as the default setting for the privacy of your photos. You can change this setting when uploading an individual photo or set of photos.

If a photo is accidentally uploaded as public, you can change it back easily. Click the lock on the photo’s page to change a photo’s setting back to private.

Managing your album and tag pages

Your album page shows all the albums you’ve created on your Trovebox site. Albums themselves have no privacy setting; instead they inherit the privacy setting of their photos. This means that if any of your photos are public, the album will appear to visitors in your album page. But if all the photos in that album are private, then visitors won’t see that album.

The same applies to tags. If all the photos with a given tag are private, then visitors won’t be able to see that tag.

If all your company’s photos are private, then no albums or tags will appear at all, and any site visitors will be none the wiser.

A look at your recent activity

Your recent activity shows your most recently uploaded photos. If all of these recently uploaded photos are private, they won’t appear in the recent activity.

Your activity feed will then appear as empty to visitors who don’t have access to these photos. And then any site visitors will have no idea of what goes on behind the scenes.

How to hide your Trovebox site from search engines

If you want to maximize the privacy of your Trovebox photo gallery, chances are you don’t want random people from the Internet to stumble across the site. Even if all your photos are marked as private, hiding your site from search engines will ensure that a minimum of people will know of your site’s existence.

To enable this option, visit your Trovebox settings and click the checkmark next to “Hide my site from search engines”. Once you’ve saved your settings, we’ll do the hard work of hiding your site, and you can resume organizing photos and making order out of your chaotic collection.

Have questions? We’re always happy to chat. Leave a comment, send an email, or mention us on Twitter.

Working with multiple users on your Trovebox site means uploading photos from a lot of different sources. You and your colleagues may upload photos from their phones or their computers at any time. You may find yourself downloading photos they took, and they may download photos you took. Downloading an individual photo is easy; visit the individual photo page and click the Download button next to the button.

But what if you need to download many photos at once?

Maybe you uploaded a lot of photos from your phone. Or maybe someone else uploaded most of the contents to that album, and now you need them. In either case, no one has the full contents of the album in one place.

Now you can do that at Trovebox.

When you visit an individual album page, you’ll see a Download button at the top of the page. Click the Download link, and you’ll get a zip file containing all the photos in your album. You can save the zip file on your computer and then do anything you like with the photos: use them in newsletters, brochures, or even your company website.

Let’s take a look at a real world example.

Anna is the communications coordinator at a nonprofit. She manages the nonprofit’s Trovebox site with several coworkers, including Ivan the events coordinator. Since Ivan gathers most of his photos from the nonprofit’s events, he uploads a lot of them instantly from his phone.

Most of the photos Ivan uploads are on his phone and on the nonprofit’s Trovebox site. Anna can download the individual photos from Trovebox for newsletters, webpages, and brochures.

One day Anna needs all the photos from an event Ivan ran recently. She could download each photo individually from the photo’s page on Trovebox. Or since all the photos are in the same Trovebox album, Anna can visit the album’s page and click the Download button. Now all the photos Anna needs are on her computer for editing and using anytime.

And she can spend that time saved on helping her nonprofit make a bigger difference.

Meanwhile, we’re always happy to chat. Leave a comment, send an email, or mention us on Twitter.

We’ve received many requests to support more file formats here at Trovebox so you can store even more of your photos in one place. Starting today you can start uploading and storing all your original RAW files in your Trovebox site.

What on earth is RAW?

RAW format is a digital camera image format that is minimally processed. It’s a lot like a photo negative from a film camera.

Still confused? That’s okay. If you don’t have any RAW files to upload, then nothing changes. You can still upload your photos, view them, and download the original files when you need them.

What happens with RAW files on Trovebox?

If your camera supports RAW files you can start uploading them to your Trovebox site now. Visit your Upload page and select the RAW files you’d like to upload.

While the RAW image uploads, we do the work and process the image as a jpeg file for viewing on your site. When you view a photo that you uploaded as a RAW file, you’re viewing the processed jpeg file.

We store the original raw file so you can download it anytime. Click the Download button next to any photo to download the RAW file to your computer.

We hope RAW support adds to your Trovebox experience and lets you store even more of your media in one place. Meanwhile, we’re always happy to chat. Leave a comment, send an email, or mention us on Twitter.

When we announced Trovebox Collect as a new and easy way to gather photos from others, we said that an iPhone version was coming soon. Now it’s here and we’re thrilled.

Collect for iPhone provides an easy and beautiful way for your colleagues and clients to send photos to you. All you need is the Trovebox Collect link from the album’s page. Visit the album you’d like your coworker to upload photos to and click Collect URL. We’ll generate a unique link for you to share with anyone you like.

Download the Collect for iPhone app now.

Let’s take a look at how this works on your coworker’s iPhone.

Once you’ve obtained a Collect link, you can send it to a colleague through email or text message. From there they can tap the link and select the photos they’d like to upload. Once they select their photos and tap Send, we’ll upload the photos to the designated album and email you with a link to view them.

No iPhone? No problem.

We can hear this question from here. “What if my colleagues don’t have an iPhone?”

That’s why we designed Trovebox Collect to be easy to use no matter what device you’re on. No iPhone presents no problem. Your colleagues can also use the Collect app for Android or upload their photos on the web. Send them the link and they can upload their photos from anywhere by clicking the link. If they choose to upload photos in their mobile browsers, we’ll display a small banner mentioning the app.

But if you find that a few folks are sharing with you often, the Collect app makes sharing quick and easy. All they have to do is tap a Collect link and start sharing. This leaves you with the peace of mind that you’ll receive your photos quickly and organized in one place.

Learn more about Trovebox Collect or download the Collect for iOS app.

We’re preparing to exhibit at a few conferences and wanted a catchy way to engage attendees walking by our booth. We knew the engagement had to be quick, familiar and provide instant feedback. It made sense to employ text and picture messaging since it’s ubiquitous.

Try The Demo

Accepting photos from picture messages

The first step we needed to solve was a way to let people send a picture message and for us to fetch the photo. My first inclination was to use Twilio’s API. Turns out that Twilio only supports picture messaging for Canadian numbers and dedicated US shortcodes.

My continued search led me to an API from Mogreet. Mogreet supports shared shortcodes. This means one shortcode can be shared by multiple customers. They’re able to do this by parsing a keyword from the body of the message and linking that to a specific marketing campaign. For each marketing campaign in your account you can select an available keyword and most importantly a webhook.

Being able to accept picture messages from anyone with a mobile phone was a solved problem.

Collecting and storing photos from picture messages

Mogreet sends a payload to the callback URL as raw post data. In the response you’ll find an array of URLs to the photos which were sent. If you’re familiar with how we build products you’ll know we rely entirely on our own API to build out features. This was no exception.

There are two features of the Trovebox upload API which made this step a breeze.

The photo parameter can be passed in as a URL – which we already have.

An upload token can be passed in to bypass OAuth and cookie authentication. See Trovebox’s anonymous uploading featured (named Trovebox Collect) for more information.

This means a single API call and the photos in the picture message are saved into the specified album.

You can see what we built on our picture message marketing campaign page.

What’s next for picture message marketing campaigns?

That’s a good question. What started off as a quick prototype for conference exhibits turned into a really slick feature that’s already scalable to all of our customers. We’re not sure if we’ll formally offer it or not but if you’ve got a use for picture message marketing campaigns then now’s your chance to let us know by emailing support@trovebox.com.

If you’re a company then chances are you have a rapidly growing media collection. We routinely talk with companies that have multi-terabyte video and photo collections and they all struggle trying to manage it all. More importantly many of these companies are adding 1 terabyte to their collection each year. It’s quite literally a growing problem.

The benefits of using Glacier for storing photos and videos

The biggest benefit of using Amazon Glacier is cost. It costs $.01 per gigabyte per month. That means 1 terabyte costs you only $10 per month. You’ll be hard pressed to find anything comparable. The takeaway is that Glacier is very cheap cold storage.

Glacier, unfortunately, has significant limitations. What if you wanted to view a photo or video which was stored in Glacier? There’s no great way to do it and if you do it often it’s going to get very expensive very quickly. That’s because storing files in Glacier is cheap but accessing them isn’t always so cheap.

The most cost effective way to use Glacier is to store files which you rarely need to access – which leads us to Amazon S3.

The benefits of using S3 for storing photos and videos

Amazon S3, like Glacier, can be used to store photos and videos. It’s not as cheap to store photos but it’s cheap to access them. Photos and videos stored in S3 are immediately available and reasonably priced to access.

You don’t want to store terabytes of photos and videos on S3. The same 1 terabyte which costs $10 per month in Glacier will cost you nearly $100 per month. Nearly 10 times as much – which leads us to combining Glacier and S3.

The benefits of combining Glacier and S3 for storing photos and videos

Trovebox gives you the best of Glacier (low cost cold storage) and S3 (low cost accessibility). We’re able to do this by storing all original high resolution photos and videos in Glacier. This keeps a copy of your original files safe at a really affordable price. Lower resolution versions of your photos and videos are then stored in S3. This makes it easy for your team to browse your entire collection at any time from your laptops, tablets or phones.

Your high resolution original files are still accessible. Every photo and album can be downloaded with a single click and you’ll have the high resolution original files.

We are able to highly customize the setup based on our customers’ workflow to maximize usability and decrease cost. If your company has an ever growing media collection then it’s worth reaching out to see if Trovebox can help. Email us at support@trovebox.com and one of our experts will be happy to talk with you.

One big concern for your business is how to securely and easily store and archive terabytes of hi-res photos and videos. You need to prepare for a disaster before it’s too late, but archiving your photos is not cheap and can be a pain to set up and manage. Trovebox has a low cost solution for you to securely and easily archive your multi-terabyte photo and video repository.

This will be a game changer for your business. Trovebox’s solution provides reliable, secure, and durable storage with an easy to use interface. You will be able to easily and cost effectively retain your multi-terabyte photo archive for months, years, or even decades without having to worry about it.

Trovebox multi-terabyte photo solution

The Trovebox service lets you use Amazon Glacier to store your multi-terabyte photo archive for any length of time – even a lifetime. Even if you lose all of your photos and equipment and on-site backups, your archive is safely secured offsite with the power of the Amazon Glacier services through Trovebox’s easy-to-use interface. No more worry. No more hassles. No more limits. Just archive and forget.

This is all included in your Trovebox Platinum account. By comparison, Google would charge you about $1,200 for 2 terabytes of storage per year and you wouldn’t get the same easy to manage interface or all of the other great features Trovebox provides.
